I've been using the fir t&g subfloor and salvaged old roofing of the same for the whole kitchen. Base coat;amber shellac for color, then a high gloss varnish for depth(5 coats) and then European flat boat varnish for the 6, 7 and 8th coats. I was going for a 60's boat look.(in particular a "Marlineer") The fir/shellac combo gives it a teakish look, I think. Although I'm having leakage problems with a subfloor balcony and have recently used marine rubber caulking for the seems and am intending to used a hardcore epoxy for a complete seal.(stuff they use in Montana) I really need brain help on the upstairs layout and hopfully my pics can show what's up? Yeah that's fir. We sanded them down a bit so that's why they look so light in color. They should darken up some in time.
